چکیده

background: salivary gland tumors constitute an important part of oral and maxillofacial pathology. pleomorphic adenoma (pa) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (mec) are the most common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. fascin is an actin-bundling protein that increases the motility of normal and transformed epithelial cells. the aims of the study were to determine the expression of fascin in these tumors and to determine its role in their progression. materials and methods: a total of 40 formalin-fi xed, paraffi n-embedded tissue blocks of pa, and 20 blocks of mec were included in this study. diagnostic confi rmation was performed through examination of hematoxylin and eosin sections. both tumors were immunohistochemically analyzed for the presence of fascin using avidin-biotin complex method and evaluated via light microscope by 2 independent observers. statistical analysis was performed using kruskal-wallis and chi-square tests with signifi cant level of p < 0.05. results: in both the tumors, the percentage of stained cells was signifi cantly correlated with intensity of staining (p = 0.01 in pa and p = 0.00 in mec). in pa, statistical analysis showed a signifi cant direct correlation between percentage of stained cells and recurrence (p = 0.00). there was no significant correlation between intensity and percentage of staining with clinicopathologic factors in mec. conclusion: fascin might be a useful marker for recurrence of pas and patients with high fascin expression in primary pa should be followed up periodically to detect potential recurrence as soon as possible. key words: benign, immunohistochemistry, malignant, salivary gland, tumor. introduction human fascin is a highly conserved 55-kda actinbundling protein that is considered to be involved in the

Role of Estrogen Receptors Protein Expression in Pleomorphic Adenoma and Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Salivary Glands

Estrogen receptors (ERs) expression has been studied in salivary gland tumors, however, there are conflicting results regarding its expression in the literatures. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of estrogen receptors protein (ERs) in pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of salivary glands using immunohistochemistry. 35 cases of intraoral minor sali...

immunohistochemical analysis of e-cadherin expression in pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma of salivary glands

objective: e-cadherin is a classic cadherin that plays a key role in epithelial cell adhesion. this protein is being referred to as the suppressor of proliferation and invasion. limited studies have investigated e-cadherin expression in salivary gland neoplasms. this study sought to assess the expression of e-cadherin and its possible role in progression and invasion of salivary gland neoplasms...

A Comparative, semi-quantitative Evaluation of Myofibroblasts Between Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma and Pleomorphic Adenoma Using α -Smooth Muscle Actin Marker

Abstract Introduction: Myofibroblasts are the main stromal components that constitute the desmoplastic reaction of host cells to inductive stimuli exerted by tumor cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the score of myofibroblasts using α -smooth muscle actin marker (α–SMA) in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) in comparison with pleomorphic adenoma (PA)and study the amount presence of t...

Immunohistochemical Expression of p53 in Pleomorphic Adenoma and Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to characterize alteration in the immunohistochemical expression of pRb in normal tissue of the salivary gland surrounding pleomorphic adenoma, the tumor cells of pleomorphic adenomas, and carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma. STUDY DESIGN A selected series of 29 cases of pleomorphic adenomas, and 27 cases of carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (undifferentiated an...

immunohistochemical analysis of b-cell lymphoma -2 in pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma

background: salivary gland tumors form a major area in the field of oral pathology. b-cell lymphoma -2 (bcl-2) is an anti-apoptotic gene with up-regulation in various neoplasms. the aim of the present case-control study was to comparatively investigate the expression of bcl-2 protein in pleomorphic adenoma (pa) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (mec) and assess its potential diagnostic role in diffe...
